Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is back in the news again. You may remember that we covered a unique settlement of a special education complaint earlier which imposed on the district a unique settlement reached between the plaintiffs and Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction. One of the issues in that complaint was the extraordinary number of student suspensions in the district.
Now, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has covered a report by a team of national experts who have come to the conclusion that MPS may have the highest rate of suspensions of any urban school district in the country. The team recommends that MPS do more to deal with the behavioral problems before they reach the threshold which requires suspension.
